Climate Adaptation Project Technician

About the Project Towards Climate Resilient Mediterranean Cities (ReMED) is a project whose overall objective is to increase the climate risk management and adaptation capacities of Mediterranean cities through the implementation of holistic, integrated, multi-scale and systemic approaches; for that, we aim to develop an innovative set of affordable tools and a comprehensive decision support framework to assist cities in:

  • Assessing and understanding the level of climate risk at urban and building scales.
  • Designing optimal climate adaptation measures in relation to local conditions.
  • Implementing climate adaptation measures through the most suitable policy instruments.
  • Monitoring and evaluating the results of adaptation measures over time.

 

Job Description Position Summary: We are seeking a motivated and skilled Climate Adaptation Project Technician to support the development and implementation of tools and frameworks for urban climate risk assessment, adaptation measure design, policy implementation, and evaluation.

 

The ideal candidate will have a strong technical background, a passion for sustainability, and the ability to work collaboratively in a multidisciplinary team.

 

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Data Collection and Analysis
    • Gather and analyze climate data from various sources (satellite imagery, weather stations, local sensors).
    • Utilize GIS and remote sensing tools to assess climate risks at urban and building scales.
    • Conduct machine learning-based predictive analysis for future climate scenarios.
  2. Tool Development and Support
    • Assist in the development of GIS-based tools and decision support systems.
    • Test and validate tools to ensure accuracy and reliability.
    • Provide technical support and training to users of the tools.
  3. Adaptation Measure Design
    • Collaborate with the team to identify and design climate adaptation measures tailored to local conditions.
    • Conduct cost-benefit analysis of various adaptation strategies.
    • Document best practices and successful case studies.
  4. Policy Implementation Support
    • Assist in the development of policy frameworks and guidelines for climate adaptation.
    • Facilitate the design of incentive programs and financial mechanisms.
    • Support public-private partnership initiatives for project funding and implementation.
  5. Monitoring and Evaluation
    • Develop/Test metrics and indicators for monitoring the effectiveness of adaptation measures.
    • Collect and analyze data on the performance of implemented measures.
    • Implement adaptive management strategies based on monitoring results.
  6. Stakeholder Engagement
    • Engage with local communities and stakeholders to gather data on climate perceptions.
    • Assist in organizing workshops and training sessions for capacity building.
    • Foster community participation and ensure adaptation measures are socially acceptable.

Qualifications:

  • Education: Bachelors degree/University degree in Geography, Civil Engineering, Environmental Sciences or related field; Certificate of Higher Education related to Geography/Environmental Sciences/Engineering.
  • Experience: Minimum of 1 year of experience in climate risk assessment, GIS, remote sensing, or related areas.
  • Technical Skills: Proficiency in GIS software, remote sensing tools, data analysis software and machine learning techniques.
  • Soft Skills: Excellent communication skills, both oral and written..Teamwork skills, problem-solving ability, and attention to detail.
  • Preferred Qualifications:
    • Experience with climate adaptation projects or urban planning.
    • Knowledge of policy frameworks and financial mechanisms for climate adaptation.
    • Experience in stakeholder engagement and community involvement.
